This post is about how to stop election rigging in Nigeria. Elections in Nigeria are neither free nor fair’. This statement is often heard whenever issues on policies or elections are mentioned or being discussed.
Suffice to say that politicians, political analysts, and the general public do not have an exact definition for election rigging, instead colloquial definitions have been adopted.
However, the Collins dictionary defined election rigging as the act of dishonestly organizing an election to get a particular desired result through fraud and interference with the election process.
This definition sounds all too familiar with the political scene in present day Nigeria. This unpleasant sound has continuously echoed in the political system for as long as most Nigerians can remember – in fact it is something the average Nigerian has come to expect whenever elections are around the corner.
This menace of election rigging has become a “sure” route to electoral victory in Nigeria, subverting freedom and fairness in the process.
Election rigging involves activities such as ballot box snatching and stuffing, conflict between party agents and electoral staff, illegal printing and usage of voters’ card, falsification of results as well as tampering with the voters’ register.
It should be borne in mind that the elections conducted in Nigeria right from 1959 down to the 2015 elections have been fraught with various irregularities hence it is not a thing of surprise that this scourge is one of the fundamental problems facing Nigeria today.
The somewhat sophisticated nature of the rigging activities shows that this rigging process, though reaches a crescendo during election period begins long before the elections take place. It also shows that our political class tend to take the issue of elections as a “do or die affair”.
CAUSES OF ELECTION RIGGING IN NIGERIA
Election rigging chews aggressively at the very heart of democracy, standard of living and the level of trust placed on the government by the hoi polloi. It is worthy of note that this political and social vice has causes; chief among them is poverty and corruption.
·                    Corruption and Poverty: Corruption has been the bane of the country for ages, inhibiting the growth and progress of the nation. The deplorable state and standard of living of the people has served to further increase the level of poverty and corruption. Those in the political class have taken advantage of the desperate Nigerians living in this sorry state by offering them meagre amounts of money or making promises which they have no plans of fulfilling. This seems good and true to the poor masses hence they trade their votes.

  • Weak Judiciary System: The performance of the judiciary has so far been under par with respect to cases of electoral fraud which are sometimes swept under the carpet or controversially decided. This is quite disappointing because this institution is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring justice, equity and fairness even to the poorest of the poor and it is most disheartening that on issues concerning election and electoral irregularity, it seems to have been folding its arms either due to the dependence on the executive, an overload of petitions or inadequate training of judicial officers. These factors play roles in hampering the efficiency of the judiciary.

  • Economic Instability: Another significant cause of election rigging is the level of economic instability in the country. This acts as a huge motivation for people to seek political office in order for them to feather their own nests with a share of our commonwealth. This further drives the “do or die” attitude which makes desperate politicians to resort to rigging.
  • Logistics: The problem of logistics has always bedeviled the electoral umpire; the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) despite the huge efforts they have put in to overcome it. This logistical problem is further exacerbated by the infrastructural challenges facing the country.
  • Staffing: Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) normally engages temporary staff during election periods. Although the engagement of temporary staff makes economic sense as explained by the immediate past INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, the problem with temporary staff is that they are more easily influenced into electoral malpractices and are sometimes not available during the process. This most likely because they have little or nothing to lose.

  • Indiscipline and Decadence amongst Security Operatives: There have been some instances of acts of indiscipline and decadence amongst our security operatives during elections. There has also been reports of security operatives assigned on election duty who have been used by politicians to perpetuate electoral fraud.
Other causes of electoral rigging include loss of democratic values, indiscipline among political parties and little or no punishment for offenders.

EFFECTS OF ELECTION RIGGING
The consequences of election rigging on the very fabric of Nigeria cannot be over emphasized as it affects every facet of the national life.
  • Political Apathy: Election rigging leads to political apathy among voters because they have had their voting rights systematically taken from them. This no doubt leads to the loss of trust and assurance which they have placed on the system to produce a credible leader.
·        Political Instability: In situations where people feel undermined, underrated, unneeded, not worthy of being able to make decisions as regards who should govern them, this would surely lead to unrest, violence and tension within the polity. Desperate politicians would take advantage of this instability to perpetuate a vicious cycle of violence in the nation. A continuous state of instability will in turn lead to underdevelopment, as no meaningful development can take place in a state of instability.
·        Waste of Tax Payers Money: In cases where elections are cancelled due to rigging, tax payers’ money which is meant for development is further spent on conducting re run elections.

HOW TO STOP ELECTION RIGGING IN NIGERIA?
The solution listed below are by no means all-encompassing but they will go a long way in reducing election rigging in Nigeria.
·        Political Training: In as much as we might be quick to waive this point aside, it is often said that “you cannot put something on nothing and expect it to stand”, relatively, we cannot put security operatives, electoral staff and politicians through the electoral process without first teaching them the “etiquette of political composure” and expect to get a credible, reliable and fraud free process. It would be very beneficial for the entire process if the key actors are oriented on the dos and don’ts.

·        Implementation of Strict Penalties: Those caught perpetuating electoral fraud must be given strict punishment that is commensurate with the offence committed to serve as deterrent to would be offenders. The judiciary would need to wake up to this responsibility.

·        Electoral Reform: The various arms of government has to show the political will to reform the existing electoral system such that all the existing loopholes can be blocked.

·        Improving Transparency: Voting will surely be smoother and

attempts to rig will become more glaring if all actors are aware that the process is completely transparent. Any attempt to rig will quickly be identified and nipped in the bud.

Here’s is what my rich dad said about creating success…
If you want to be rich, don’t work for a business. Own a business.
My highly-educated poor dad worked hard being an employee. By working hard, he got promoted and gained more responsibility. But as he climbed the ladder, he had less and less time to spend with his children. He left for work at seven in the morning, and we were often in bed before he came home.
Success as an employee often brings you less and less time.
Rich dad worked hard as a business owner and as an investor.
He climbed his own ladder, and the higher he climbed, the more time he had for his family. When his business reaped profits, he expanded the business and simply hired more people to do the work.
Rich dad’s central strategy for achieving financial freedom was to build a business of his own.
His reasoning was that most people work for:
1. The owners of the companies that employ them,
2. The government through taxes, and
3. The banks that own their mortgages.
No wonder they have little left at the end of their working days!
To escape the Rat Race, rich dad would say, “You need to work for yourself.” You may be saying, “But the odds of a start-up succeeding are against me. Nine out of ten companies fail within five years.”
Instead, say to yourself, “One out of every ten businesses succeed within five years, and mine will be one!”
You must be very determined if you want to build your own business, but if you are, you’ll have a head start down the path to financial freedom.
Starting a business is not for everyone. Don’t worry. If you choose not to start a business, then you can still achieve financial freedom, albeit more slowly, by keeping your expenses low, reducing your liabilities, and diligently building a base of solid assets.

Bedwetting is the unwanted voiding of urine that is beyond the immediate control of the child. Note that in many cultures, there are age limits when this is considered as abnormal.
Recently, in a newspaper publication, a woman beats her daughter to death because she beds wetted. Discussion with a parent at the child clinic reveals that different local treatment modalities are meted out to children that bed wet in Nigeria. This rage from issues like making the child urinate in hot charcoal or hot ashes, tying a bell around the neck of the child to shame him or her, tying a toad around his or her waist and, ultimately, to incessant flogging which may lead to dire consequences like harm or death to the child.
TYPES OF BEDWETTING
There are two main types of bedwetting:
a.     Primary type: There are those who have been bedwetting from birth and
b.     Secondary type: There are those who bed wetted, later stop and then started bedwetting again.
It may be daytime and nighttime wetting or it may happen at both times. Girls usually become dry before boys. Discussion with parents shows that some girls even become dry and would wake up at night before the age of two years.
SOME COMMON REASONS WHY CHILDREN BEDWET
It is known that by the age of three years, a child should be able to stay dry both night and day. Then, what are the reasons for bedwetting after this age?
Many reasons have been given for this:
1.     The child may be ill
2.     The child may be on some drugs that make him or her oversleeps
3.     About 15% of children will wet their bed after the age of three and this is more common with boys.
4.     Excess use of pan pans or nappy. This is overuse of pan pans or nappy when the child is over three years going to four or five. When this continues, the child may be used to it where he or she urinates on his or her body without taking off pant.
5.     Bedwetting is hereditary hence both parents may have bed wetted to later ages.
6.     Most people stop bed wetting at puberty and do not have emotional problems.
7.     Persistence bedwetting beyond the age of three or four may rarely be as a result of kidney or bladder problem, in most cases, it is due to the devolvement of the child’s bladder control that is smaller than normal.
8.     Emotional problems may cause bed wetting after several months or years of dryness during the night.
9.     It may be a reflection of new fears or insecurities. This may follow certain invents which makes a child to feel insecure, e.g. moving to a new home, parent divorce, separation from loved one, the death of a family member or loved ones, arrival of a new baby or child in the home.
1.Sometimes it may occur after a period of dryness because the child’s original toilet training was too stressful e.g. living in over controlled environment, institution.
SOLUTION TO BOTH PARENTS AND CHILDREN
1.     It is important to limit liquid before bedtime. Take dinner at least three hours before bedtime.
2.     Encourage the child to use the toilet before bedtime.
3.     Reward the child with praises, attention, and other rewards on dry mornings.
4.     Let the child be an active participant by keeping an exercise book or wall chart of the wet and dry night with the child marking each dry night a star. Do this consciously for one month at first which may be the only cure needed.
5.     Avoid criticism and punishment for a wet night.
6.     Wake the child during the night to empty the bladder. (if you are a deep sleeper, set an alarm which may include the of your GSM alarm).
7.     As parents, remember that children rarely wet on purpose and usually feel ashamed about the incident. If a child does it on purpose, look at the environment, maybe that toilet is far from the room. That child might be afraid of darkness and of going out alone. Therefore, do not make your child feel naughty or shame. Encourage him or her and express the confidence that he or she will soon be able to stay dry at night.
8.     These steps are all that you may need to take care of bed wetting in your child. If all these fail, sick for professional help from your doctor or a paediatrician. If the problem persists, the doctor may see a need to refer your child to other professionals like a mental health professional.
9.     For bed-wetting from other cases, such as diseases of the spine and others with definite diseases, the general practitioner or the paediatrician may refer the child for surgery.

It was a rain of tears in Omoku, in Ndoni of Rivers state, Nigeria, as some suspected unknown gunmen opened fire on people, said to be coming back from cross overnight at the early hours of Monday, 1st January 2018.

It is a usual celebration all over the world that 31st December is said to be a cross overnight for all livings beings including children and adult. Christians normally go to church to give thank to God for sparing their lives to see the end of the year and also to commit the new Day, Month, and  Year to God for another safekeeping. Other religions do similar things while others gather in either bear parlor or stay vigilant for the last hour of the 31st December and to also witness the first minute of the new year.

It was a different story altogether for these yet unidentified bodies as suspected unknown gunmen opened fire on them thereby terminating their various wishes for the year 2018.  As of the time of this report, efforts to reach their families was abortive since those around were unable to speak due to the shock of the sad news. You will be updated as soon as there is any further information about it. May their souls rest in peace.
